BIO

Neil Lowe (b. 1972, Zimbabwe) is a technologist, multi-media designer, and conceptual artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. With a background spanning technology and fine arts, Lowe brings a unique perspective to his artistic practice. He holds an MFA (with distinction) from the Dunedin School of Art in New Zealand, where he honed his skills in sculptural and multimedia installations.

Lowe's work has been exhibited locally and internationally, including at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and galleries in New Zealand. His artistic journey is informed by his experiences growing up in Zimbabwe and South Africa, his subsequent relocation to New Zealand, and his return to South Africa, giving him a unique view of postcolonial narratives and power dynamics in these settler-colonial societies.

Lowe works across the physical and digital realms, translating between them using digital capture technologies and advanced fabrication processes. His practice spans wall sculptures, monotypes, and multimedia installations that combine sculpture and found objects with video projection and sound. He explores the evolving relationship between tangible and virtual space through this interplay of digital and material techniques and an understanding of experience design.

Neil is affiliated with the Industrial Design Department at the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, who provide technical support and advice regarding production methods and strategies.
